Today, I have setup CERN software ROOT v5.20.00 (http://root.cern.ch)from SOURCE on my UBUNTU 2.6.22-15-generic.

I used the steps here -> http://root.cern.ch/root/Install.html.

It worked very well and works very fast.

FlashGot 0.9.5 & DownThemAll 1.0 on Firefox 2.0.0.13 work great

I am using DownThemAll since 1.0b version on Firefox. It is stable and good. My only problem was “some” links which are given as TEXT in some website. When they are not given as ” real links” DownThemAll was not catching them. Today I have upgraded my FlasGot to 0.9.5 and DownThemAll to v1.0. Now FlashGot has an option to use DownThemAll so I can just choose the text, right click and say FlashGot Selected and links go to queue automatically.

Upgrade and V_BIOS problems

Today I have upgraded my Ubuntu (to kernel 2.6.20-16 and upgrade for all the softwares that available) with latest source from “Main Server” (somehow Danish server did not work). There were series of problems. First of all Xorg updated the xorg.conf file so my older version was backed up (thanks Linus). So XServer did not start. I have deleted the new conf file and replace with the old one. After that everything went very smooth. For people who has similar configuration I would like to share my conf file here. Maybe it can give you a hint for your setup.

As you know I have;
- I810 Intel graphics chipset
- 1440×900 widescreen laptop screen as internal
- 1680×1050 widescreen ACER AL2216W as external

Ubuntu 7.10 is out there for you…

Last weekend I have upgraded my 7.04 to 7.10 over system upgrade service. Only problem was with CUPS. somehow it could not upgrade it. One of these weekends I will pass through my previous posts and add small notes to them if anything changed in 7.10.

So far 915resolution is working. More to come

I was looking for a tool to change the GRUB splash screen or boot order on my box and I came across a nice post at Ubuntu forums. There is a tool called GrubEd. It is a script which has an GUI. You simply set it up and run it. Installation is quite simple. You just run the “install” script and at the end it tells you how to start the software, or there is a ready link for your desktop.

When you run it, you can change the boot OS in seconds or you can edit anything related to GRUB.

Picasa2 for Windows works with Wine & Linux perfect !

As you know Picasa now has an option to make Web Album with just one click. BUT THIS VERSION DOES NOT DO SO. so I did run the Picasa2 windows version in Linux with Wine engine. Without any problem I can do anything I want and UPLOAD WEBALBUM WORKS !

If you have windows partition, setup Picasa2 there and run over wine like this:

wine /directory/where/picasa/is

It might tell you that you do not have Gecko package but Wine install it for you in minutes. If you totally gave up from windows just try to ask one of your friends to setup Windows version and give you the c:/programme files/picasa2 directory. Total of 26.4 mb. and call it from where ever you put it like above example.

i8kutils

If you want to control fan speed according to CPU, GPU, Harddisk or Memory temperature there is very little nice tool ready to install in Ubuntu. I previously used the Windows version under XP and helped me a lot. Linux version is only command line but can be merged with some monitorin utilities. I won’t go into that but I will tell you how to setup and avoid a common error of i8kutils.

1) From SPM setup i8kutils

2) when you try to run any tools come with it you might get an error as “can’t open /proc/i8k”. If not go step 4, if you get the error read step 3.

3) Do these two easy steps:

modprobe i8k force=1

cat /proc/i8k

4) Now you can run it without problem.

Nautilus image converter

Today I setup Nautilus image converter made by Bitron. I am adding this entry just to make a small note. You have to restart Xserver to see the effect of the installation.
